Canon MX-860 is an all-in-one printers designed for home or small business. Printing is fast, loud and clear. The auto-document feeder scans both sides of the page, a huge time saver when working with two-sided originals. Couple that with duplex printing and is trivial to reproduce two-sided forms and documents. Network connectivity also works well … in the six months I had the printer is operated without problems in a mixed Mac / Windows environment on both wired and wireless networks.

Let’s look at the MX-860 on a piece-by-piece basis …

Print
Canon MX-860 uses a set of five ink cartridges for printing. Two of the cartridges are blacks, with the other three are typical Magenta / Cyan / Yellow in September The print output is easily strong enough to be used for business letters, but almost rival laser printers in terms of quality. To save paper, the printer has built-in duplexing. I have not measured, but one-sided printing speed is pretty good … I suspect that the weight of 38 pounds the printer is due to some good-sized motors pulling the paper and moving the print head around. Printing in duplex mode is a bit ’slower. To prevent smudging, the printer waits for the first side to dry before printing the second side.

The photographs are a good gradation of tone and general appearance, but they are not the same as at the end of a printer that is specifically designed for printing photographs. The difference, however, is light and they all liked the prints I made. The printer has the usual slot on the front to allow for camera memory cards.

Scan
Whoopee! Duplex scanning! Have you ever tried to scan a stack of two double-sided? And have them merged into a single file in the right order? I tried. Once. Then I went out and paid $ 400 for a dedicated scanner (the Fujitsu ScanSnap S510). With a capacity of duplex scanning on the MX-860, I would not have needed to do so. You put the cards on the feeder, tell the printer that it is a duplicate and press the button.

Fax
Outgoing faxes works well. The fax appears to arrive. Originally, the designers of the fax system to lose a very important feature … you can not specify the number of rings before the fax machine answers. Without this ability, it was almost impossible for the machine to coexist peacefully with the telephone service in a single row house. This problem has been solved by a firmware update and buyers can set the current number of rings before pickup. Unfortunately no, Canon has released new firmware, so owners of older machines are locked … be careful if you buy one used. 1 brownie point to recognize and resolve the problem. -2 For not making it available … :> (

Networking and Installation
I have not had problems getting both wired and wireless network up and running. Installation is simple and straight forward. You’ll need a USB cable to get the wireless network configured. It may be possible to wirelessly configure the wireless network, but there are some madness that I did not try. You can use only one network – wired or wireless – in one time. As I said in the intro, which comes with both Macintosh and Windows software. Getting it to work on my other computers on the network was as simple as entering the DVD and run the setup program.

Ink consumption
Some printers ink politely SIP, but this is not one of them. This procedure is not as bad as the consumption of beer to a frat party, but in the last 2,500 pages, which I spent six black and two complete set of cartridges for color. Running at just over 10.5 cents per page on Amazon today (11/11/09) The prices for OEM ink cartridges … good for normal use, but not great, if you intend to use the printer heavily. Your consumption of ink can vary, depending on the mix of photos, graphics and text that is printed.

Packaging
You know that the orange ribbon printer that produces the ubiquitous use of keeping it all together? And ‘there in spades. I would like properties that are franchises. Otherwise, it seems that the printer would ship well. It is well insulated with plenty of polystyrene board.

In summary, this is my fourth Canon printer and probably the twentieth that I owned. Outside the fax issue, it works great. The duplex scanning and printing are valued additions and real time saver … I would have given a solid five stars if it were not for the problem fax. I have not used the printer long enough to get a sense of reliability in the long term, after a couple thousand sheets of paper, was jam free and solid.

The iPhone is the Canon PIXMA MX860 All-In-One Printers – is feature packed, easy to use, and exceeds the expectations of guests.

SUMMARY
Excellent quality, clear menus / Instructions / software, wireless setup, printing and scanning on OS X is impeccable. ADF and Duplexer in a high quality wireless printer from Canon is a theft for $ 199.

PROS
The quality of construction, installation instructions, feature set is enormous, the price tag is not

CONS
Weight, could be more quiet, internal tray does not handle photo media, no fax wireless

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Build quality is impressive. And ‘well-packed and the instructions are the best I’ve seen of any product of consumer electronics including the previous Canon products. There is a stand “to keep open the printer during insertion of the 5 ink tanks and closing is revealed that a piston as sweet as the hood of a luxury car. Other details include a mechanism to prove that the output opens automatically when printing to keep the documents submitted by vomiting on the floor. There is definitely some weight to this device, and is much bigger than a printer you can get free with the purchase of the PC. Again I said to myself same as I unpacked it was this really only $ 199? “as I was looking at more expensive models and was concerned the quality would suffer the MX860 provides the point of price.

PHYSICAL SETUP
Okay, I was flat out afraid to enter the print head and break the cap off the five ink tanks and include delicate, but I think the instructions were just trying to make a point. In any case, will prepare the setup with lots of light as the process of inserting the print head is dark and covered with stickers warning. I had no problems though, because the onscreen instructions were clear (both visually and intellectually) and after printing a printhead alignment of three steps, the output quality was quite promising. I went with the wireless setup so I left the USB cable (Canon, thanks!) And telephone lines (do not mean fax) in the bag. The built in paper tray (letter only) hides away neatly under the printer and there is a second entrance on the back of the other media, plain paper, envelopes, or photo paper (hey a free sample pack 4×6 inclusive, cool!)

Network Setup
I installed the drivers OS X on a MacBook and it was very easy. Note that there are different instructions for 10.4 and 10.5, which are the only two supported versions of February 2009 (Vista, XP and 2000 are also supported, although it is not clear whether 64-bit drivers are provided for operating systems). The software is as simple as the instructions printed. I have installed the software, including Canon’s photo as I expect iPhoto to manage these tasks.I make the printer wireless LAN setup. Note, however, a couple of factors: Canon proide not totally wireless installation if Wi-Fi Protected Setup even if I went with the more straight forward USB connection for printer installation in wireless network (it turns out that the USB cable was helpful). The second item to note is that the software required a reboot I do not get used with OS X, but nonetheless went along. It ‘was very nice to see the results of two minutes a Wi-Fi quality test that shows the signal strength from base station to the printer. (I was in the green area of about 50-60 meters from the base station through two walls).

PRINT
The press is so subjective that I have no intention of trying to quantify. I will say that it seems very cool for me – not cool laser printer, but just as strong as I expected. They have not yet printed photos. Printing speed is about moderate and strong as my $ 300 HP All-in-One from 2004, but lower in tone so as not bothersome.

SCAN
Can scan from the glass, or the Auto-Document Feeder (ADF) and even going back and forth duplex scanning from the ADF. The awesome on-screen menu system is intuitive and allows you to choose your target wireless device to scan. The scan was fast and quiet than I expected and the resolution is excellent for an All-in-One. This is not a dedicated scanner and it will scan a legal document, but when you want to quickly scan the front and back off the forms before sending in, this will be a good friend to have. I expect to batch scanning old photos printed for importing into iPhoto.

OTHER FEATURES
I have not had time to try to print from a memory card, duplex or ADF copy / print / scan, fax, or receiving a fax, or Bluetooth (not buy the optional $ 30). But what I was strongly impressed is crisp, intuitive menus. Very easy to navigate and follow. Things are where you think it will be. I wanted to lower the volume of keypad confirmation beep and nicely had a full menu selection to do so in several volumes, including off, as well as various settings for press or alarms. The attention to detail and the user experience really shows.

I hope this review helpful to you and you like the new Canon Pixma MX860.

Pros: Print speed is acceptable. Good and fast drafts and copies. Quiet. The quality of the text is almost laser strong. Very good photo quality. Sided printing and copying. Software that works well, unlike HP.

Cons: can not produce correct copy of documents with margins of less than 0.25 inches. Borderless copy does not help. You can not print from USB keys. Poorly designed USB slot fits barely USB key media. No preview document copying and scanning on the LCD as HP.

Summary: Let me start with the bad. I support interception was Canon for the past few days because I discovered a major flaw in the copy function of the printer. MX860 is absolutely unable to produce a copy of the document that has side margins of less than 0.25 inches. If you have a 8.5×11 paper with margins of small businesses that want to copy, too bad you have to scan a PC and then reprint, otherwise margins will be partially cut off. I tried everything to fit page, which should be designed only for cases like this, borderless copy, reduced in size. Can I reduce the doc to 25% original size and still the margin adjacent to the edge of the initial horizontal flatbed scanner is messed up. I do not think this is a defect in my particular printer and technical support did not say that either. I sent them copies of my scan samples to show them that no method can be used to make a copy of that success. It ‘been very frustrating, and just today my wife asked me to make a backup copy of certain documents of the credit card company sent her and I could not do in MX860. Are actually comparing MX860 for HP Photosmart C7280. Canon kills the HP in terms of quality and sharpness of the text as well as the quality of the photos in particular the definition of quality standards. But when it comes to making copies of these documents, HP can easily reach the desired result by using Fit to Page. Canon, what were you thinking?

Also, try to put a 4×6 photo of departure in a corner where the arrow on the surface marks the starting position. You’ll get a copy that lacks 0.25inches on one of its sides. You will have to move the picture from the edge of the scanner to obtain a correct copy.

Needless to say I am very angry with this AIO at this point. If you are not bothered by such a problem, this is a great all AIO with some very useful extras. Scan straight to PDF is very good and so one-sided copying (unless you have a document with these margins). Very good print quality.

But by default, and the machine is getting 3 stars from me. If the copy was not a problem would have been 4 or maybe even 4.5.

BTW tech support said they will forward my comments to the program customer feedback. There is nothing they can do just as I thought. Unless enough people complain, maybe a little ‘before this is fixed, if ever.
